Environmental initiatives
We operate around 160 ships. The operation of ships comes with significant environmental risks such as the release of gas pollutants and greenhouse gases due to the use of fossil fuels and the possibility of marine pollution due to accidents. On land, office work also creates an environmental burden through the use of paper and electricity, which generates waste. This is one unfortunate and unavoidable environmental aspect arising from the continuation of our business.
In a sustainable society, our responsibilities are to correctly recognize the environmental risks based on business analyses, minimize the environmental burden as much as possible, and engage in activities to improve the environment.
Additionally, based on an environmental system compliant with ISO 14001:2015, we suitably manage environmental risks in our ship operations and office operations on land to improve the environment and achieve a sustainable society.
History of activities
[Energy]
As a specified transport business, we are striving to be more energy efficient and to reduce CO2 emissions under the revised Act on the Rational Use of Energy.
* Specified transport business: We meet the criteria of a cargo transport business with gross tonnage of 20,000 GT or more.
| 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | Change (Compared to previous year) |
|
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Energy consumption | 132,164KL | 120,726KL | 118,329KL | 98% |
| CO2 emissions | 361,748 t | 313,983t | 331,394t | 105.5% |
| Transport volume | 8,161,210,000 t/km | 7,181,860,000 t/km | 6,936,740,000 t/km | 96.6% |
| Unit consumption* | 0.162 | 0.168 | 0.171 | 101.5% |
* Energy consumption: Fuel (type A fuel oil, type C fuel oil) consumption converted into crude oil volume.
* Unit consumption: Fuel consumption (crude oil equivalent in kiloliters) / transport volume (in 10,000 ton/km)
Unit consumption (see above table*) is an index for measuring the efficiency of energy use during transport. As unit consumption decreases, energy is used more efficiently, and the burden on the environment decreases.
Over the past 5 years, the domestic petroleum transport environment has changed greatly. Due to reduced oil refinement capabilities and fuel oil demand as a result of the Energy Supply Infrastructure Advancement Act, conditions unfavorable to efficient operations continue, such as longer ballast voyage distances and smaller transport volumes.
Unfortunately, we were not able to hit our target of reducing our unit consumption by an average of 1% for the year as stipulated by the Act on the Rational Use of Energy.
Difficult conditions are likely to continue into the future, but we have a responsibility to use energy efficiently, so we will strengthen our efforts.
[Purchase of green bonds]
In order to contribute to green projects that can be implemented by financial institutions and corporations to reduce the environmental burden and introduce renewable energy, we purchase green bonds.
By promoting initiatives for the environment both through business and investment activities, we intend to contribute to a future de-carbonized society.
[Green purchases]
We have promoted green purchasing since FY2007, and we have been shifting to green products* for internal use. We have been making steady achievements in the use of green products, including not just vehicles, stationary, etc., but we also purchased 200 work uniforms with an eco-mark in a single year for both ship crew and land staff. In the future, we will encourage product suppliers to offer green products and actively make green purchases.
* We consider green products to be those recommended by green purchase networks (products listed on Eco Product Net) and those with an eco-label.
